What the data actually reveals is a much darker picture: crypto is being used as a high-risk, speculative bridge in a system where the underlying asset flows are fundamentally misaligned with the settlement layer's security assumptions. The next wave of institutional adoption in crypto will not be driven by retail speculation but by real-world settlement needs. That means protocols that manage this liquidity trap risk — by providing dynamic spread algorithms, decentralized insurance for counterparty default, or automated hedging against geopolitical volatility — will capture the lion's share of value creation. Conversely, protocols that ignore this structural fragility are building systems that work perfectly in a vacuum and fail catastrophically in the real world.
